Arthur Mellows Village College

Delivering learning for life within an aspirational culture

House System

The new house system, created in 2023 is now an important part of school life at Arthur Mellows Village College, with a number of house events organised throughout the academic year. There are four houses, based on the elements of the AMVC school badge :

1. Abbey House

(Red) - Named after the historic Peterborough Abbey, now known as Peterborough Cathedral, Abbey House draws inspiration from the rich heritage of the area. In the time of the Domesday Book, much of the land in Glinton was owned by Peterborough Abbey and its knights, highlighting the significance of this institution in our local history. Additionally, the nearby Crowland Abbey and Thorney Abbey, further enrich our connection to the past. At Abbey House, we celebrate these historical ties while fostering a strong sense of belonging and teamwork among our students.

2. Book House

(Blue) - Named in honour of our school, which has been an integral part of Glinton village since its opening in 1949, Book House reflects our commitment to learning and education. Originally designed to host lectures and equipped to be converted into a hospital after World War II, the college stands as a testament to the community's resilience and dedication to education. At Book House, we encourage our students to embrace the values of curiosity and scholarship, fostering a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

3. Castle House

(Green) - Named after the historic Woodcroft Castle in Etton, which was built at the end of the 13th century, Castle House draws inspiration from the enduring legacy of  this remarkable structure. The castle stands as a symbol of spirit and fortitude, reflecting the values we strive to instil in our students. At Castle House, we encourage our members to harness their inner strength, work collaboratively, and face challenges with confidence, all while celebrating the rich history that surrounds us.

4. Torch House

(Yellow) - an inspiring part of our school's house system that symbolises peace, unity, friendship, and the spirit of competition. Central to our school badge, the torch represents the values we hold dear as a community. Torch House embodies the idea of bringing people together in a celebration of achievement and camaraderie. We encourage our students to ignite their passions, support one another, and strive for excellence, all while fostering a sense of belonging and teamwork. At Torch House, we shine brightly as we work together to create a positive and inclusive environment for all.

All students are given the opportunity to gain House Points for achievements and good behaviour across the school. Students participate in sporting and academic activities throughout the school year, cooperating as part of small communities with the aim of winning the House Cup. The house system at AMVC aims to prepare our students to:

Compete

Every student has the chance to get involved in a variety of activities, allowing them to make meaningful contributions to their house.

Respect

Our students exhibit empathy and understanding, fostering a positive and respectful environment within their house, school, and the broader community.

Cooperate

By collaborating, students aim to showcase teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship, promoting equality and opportunities for everyone.

Encourage

The integrity of our students helps build a supportive house system that nurtures inspiring, creative, and positive role models and leaders.
