Safeguarding

Arthur Mellows Village College fully recognises its responsibility to protect and safeguard the welfare of children and young people in its care.

The College will therefore be alert to signs of abuse and neglect and will follow the Safeguarding procedures to ensure that children receive appropriate and effective support and protection.

Arthur Mellows Village College has a duty of care to all young people to pass on any information which gives rise to a concern about a child’s welfare, including risk from neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Key staff will discuss any concerns with parents and where appropriate, referrals to other agencies. However, in situations where the child is suspected to be at risk of harm, the law says that schools may take advice from other agencies without informing parents/carers.

In accordance with local Information Sharing protocols, we will ensure that information is shared securely and sensitively. Information will only be shared with other services where it is deemed necessary and proportionate to ensure that children and young people are safe and receive the right service.

1.What support can we offer your child?

In school we have a strong and committed team of pastoral support staff. Every year group from Year 7 to Post 16 has at least one Pastoral Support Officer.

We have a specialist safeguarding team who work closely with all pastoral staff in school alongside the school based counsellor and can liaise with external agencies for example, Children’s Social Care, Police and Health Services to ensure a fully inclusive working

The College also has good links with the local Safer Schools Officer PC Chris Baker who can assist with any concerns or worries in or out of school.

As a school we have access to external support through the Early Help process. If your child needs some additional support, we can look at a whole family assessment to see which service would be most suitable, we can also help support parents, carers and families with out of school worries for example, housing, debt and crisis. For some families this is also alongside the SEND department.

Our Safeguarding team are always happy to support and both students and families are welcome to contact the Safeguarding team for support or advice at any time.

If you have a concern about a child’s safety or welfare you can contact

4. Prevent and Chanel

What is Prevent?

Prevent is about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of terrorism. Prevent is 1 of the 4 elements of CONTEST, the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.

What is Channel?

Channel provides support across the country to those who may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism. The overall aim of the programme is early intervention and diverting people away from the risk they may face.

Arthur Mellows Village College takes its responsibility for implementing the Prevent strategy very seriously. We have two trained Prevent Leads in the College: Mr Nathan Steele and Ms Emma Kavanagh. As a learning organisation, we are committed to responding to the ideological challenge of terrorism and the threat the College community faces from those who promote terrorism. The College work with the Safer Schools Officer as well as the Safeguarding Leads.

4. E Safety

E Safety is a growing area for concern with parents and for us as educators. We have a number of trained E Safety DSLs within the college whose core aim is to educate and monitor the dangers of E Safety. We take opportunities to provide training for parents, students and staff to promote a safe and happy learning environment but also to ensure that outside of College, students and parents feel safe and able to support and protect against the dangers of E Safety. You can find some helpful guidance on different networking apps, online websites and other forums that your child may access together with our E Safety policy here.

The College recognises the growing trends amongst young people with image sharing as an E Safety issue. We follow Safeguarding guidance on responding to image sharing as outlined in KCSIE (2024). You can also find out more about this in the document below.

The College follows guidance as advised by the DFE and Safeguarding KCSIE documents on responding to sexual harassment and violence.

The Lead DSL for sexual harassment and violence is Ms Emma Kavanagh
